A Good Time for The Truth

Talking about race can be a very touchy subject because you don't want to say the wrong thing to offend that person or group of people. Racism is still an issue in our world today, especially among the African American community who over the years have experienced police brutally and having to be discriminated.

There is not one day Black people can go and stop thinking that they're black, they can't ignore the fact that their skin color is what people see. Black people are considered to be dangerous, that they are criminals that do drugs, and they are seen as uneducated. Being black is walking down the street only to be stopped by an officer because they thought you were up to something, being black means people locking their car doors when you walk past them.

A YouTuber by the name Prince Ea posted a video about 2 years ago, It's called I am NOT Black and You are NOT white. He talks about how everything about us labeled, how it divides us because of our skin color, our religion, our sexuality etc. A label shouldn't define you, its should be you who changes other peoples perspective of you. If they see you as "this" or "that" you need to take charge and throw away that label.

There are some Africans who don't identify as Black, because of the negativity they would hear about Black people living in America. They were always arrested, people were scared of them and Africans don't want to be identified as Black, but no matter what, people will see their skin color and think "Black" and nothing more. In Trouble in Mind, when Ibe talked about how he didn't really consider himself as Black was kind of interesting because where he's from, that word doesn't exist, "You see, Black exists only because America is White." (70)  And what he meant by that is the word is American Made, its what white people used to separate people with a darker skin color, anyone who isn't or wasn't born white is considered Black.

In the article here, it talks about that when it comes to jobs applications they all have that
"what is your race" box and for people of color its a lot of decision making to check it off or not.

Lets quickly discuss what the difference between ethnicity and race. According to Merriam Webster, the definition of ethnic is of or relating to large groups of people classes according to common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background. As for race, it means any of the groups that human beings can be divided into based shared distinctive physical traits. There is a huge difference between the two, ethnicity does not mean race and race does not mean ethnicity.

In this video, young Black men discuss what its like growing up Black. It was upsetting to watch this, especially when it came to the younger ones, their just kids, they shouldn't ever have to think about people being afraid of them.

"To be Black (and conscious) in America is to always question reality, to constantly hold it to a microscope and analyze its hidden parts." (75) Being a Black person means to be self aware of your surrounding, the looks people give you when they see you. If you say the wrong thing, if your dressed a certain way, talk or walk a certain way, your looked at as if you weren't human.
